Strong Ties Bind Community and Hair Connection
Posted by: | CommentsNEENAH, WI, October 31, 2011 – 2011 proved to be a year filled with community stewardship and goodwill, with the help of one local salon. The Hair Connection in Neenah has made giving back a way of doing everyday business. The animal shelter, middle and high schools, local military wives and breast cancer marchers all felt the caring touch of this year’s Hair Connection initiatives.
Last spring, Hair Connection teamed up with YouthGo, a local non-profit organization encouraging kids to be a proactive part of the community. In return for their extra project work, they received free haircuts and styles of their choice this past August, courtesy of the Hair Connection staff.
In June of 2011, Hair Connection staffers decided to thank combat veterans with their Military Makeover campaign. Complete transformations included hair style, color, and make-up – helping one local mom, Rebekah Van de Hey, shake off the desert dust of her active 2010 duties.
When the Neenah Animal Shelter needed to raise money for abandoned, lost, and unwanted pets, the Hair Connection donated hair care items for the Furry Friends raffle. Held at Neenah’s Riverside Park, the Furry Friends event included a 2K walk, raffle, and micro-chipping clinic.
It didn’t surprise anyone when The Hair Connection got involved with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer again this year. They’ve made a habit of encouraging families with pink hair extensions and clip-ins for participants of the three-mile walk out of Memorial Park, also in Neenah.
Participating in community events keeps businesses in touch with the needs of their neighborhoods. When it comes to sponsorship, a small staff can still make a big difference. The caring hands at the Hair Connection prove it.
The Hair Connection is Fox Valley’s only non-commissioned salon, dedicated to personalized, exclusive service provided by each stylist, manicurist, and colorist. Owned and operated by Connie Koehnke, the Hair Connection is located at 1315 S. Commercial Street in Neenah. To learn more, call 920-722-2341.
Making Strides With Hair Connection

Hair Connection partnered with ‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’ on October 8, 2011.
This event was held at Memorial Park in Neenah. It was such a positive experience and joyous occasion for men, women and children of the community brought together to honor breast cancer survivors. We all gathered together to support cancer awareness.
The Hair Connection contributed by offering several different hair extensions, clip-ins and feathers for purchase. Our salon professionals did an incredible job using their talent to participants with proceeds benefiting The American Cancer Society. If you were unable to make this event, we still have pink extensions, feathers and clip-ins available. Pink retail is 20% off this month and 10% of all retail proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The smiles and laughter brought individuals and businesses together for a day of fun. ‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’ will be a day to remember for all of us at The Hair Connection and for every person and businesses that made this event a success.
We had so much fun and want to continue to keep ‘Making Strides’ in the forefront of the community and have many photos we want to share that will keep the spirit alive.

Lacey Adding Pink Hair Extension

Rachael attaches a pink hair extension. After the extension was attached, it was trimmed to the same length as the hair, and curled or flat ironed to make it match the shape and style of the surrounding hair.

To top off our day,we were able to sponsor the Neenah Animal Shelter’s Furry Flurry Pet Walk across town at Riverside Park. We donated a large gift basket, which was used in a raffle. This was a walk for pets, and proceeds helped the Neenah Animal Shelter provide food, shelter, medical treatment and forever homes for companion animals in need.
A day of fun for two great causes. We couldn’t ask for anything more!

The Hair Connection Promotes Breast Cancer Awareness
Posted by: | Comments
Chances are you know someone affected by breast cancer. Over 182,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in American women this year, according to the American Cancer Society. When you add that number to the women who are already fighting this disease, the numbers are staggering. This October, The Hair Connection is joining with women around the country to promote breast cancer awareness and prevention.
Because breast cancer has affected staff and clientele, owners Jeanne Mykel and Connie Koehnke want to help spread awareness and contribute toward funding research. Getting involved to meet the needs of the community is a win – win for everyone. All through October, a pink donation box will be available in the lobby for customer donations, and 10% of all retail sold will go directly to the “Susan G. Komen for the Cure” campaign for breast cancer awareness.
During the promotion, customers will be draped in pink capes, offered pink lemonade, and for every sale of a pink flat iron, the manufacturer will contribute $10.00 toward breast cancer awareness. The Hair Connection will also donate $1.00 for every new client haircut and $5.00 for every hair color.
“I really like the pink flat iron idea,” said Susan Hamilton, parent of two teenage daughters and Race For The Cure participant for the last five years, “Women need to be aware of the choices they make everyday in their diet and exercise that contribute to their breast health in the long run. The flat irons are a great reminder. Eating right and staying in shape are two ways you can greatly reduce your risk of breast cancer, and I like the idea of starting every day thinking pink.”
Risk factors for breast cancer are more prevalent in Caucasian women, and are greatly increased with age, lack of physical activity, and the accompanying weight gain. Risk is increased again if a family member has been diagnosed with the disease. The staff of The Hair Connection would like you to learn more about what you can do if you’re supporting someone with breast cancer, or if you are concerned about your own breast health. Contact www.komen.org for more information. Together we can fight this disease.
